A Monument that Listens Back

National Light

What does a civic beacon look like for a democracy still unfolding?

Conceived for America's  250th birthday, National Light is an adaptable, living symbol rooted in a simple idea: every voice matters.

As a luminous, ever-evolving installation of light and sound, National Light combines interactive exhibits, a theater, and “contribution stations” that invite visitors to reflect on democracy and timely topics such as Veterans Day. Each visitor’s voice becomes part of the experience, translated in real time into a synchronized 360° composition of light and sound.

Moving through the installation, translucent surfaces reveal shifting visual effects, while a live “symphony” of voices turns participation into the experience itself—with no two moments or messages the same. It also includes vidoes of historic speeches in America's history, like those of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Lincoln.

Designed as a flexible concept that can be translated across scales and settings—from Riverfield to Philadelphia’s LOVE Park and the National Constitution Center—National Light evolves with each place it inhabits.

We want to make it a gathering place for people thinking about civics, government, and the state of the country.
