The City Takes Center Stage in Edmonton’s First Digital Art Installation

Prisms at HSBC Place

Though undoubtedly important, banks and office lobbies are rarely an attraction. But “Prisms” at HSBC Place might just change that.

To match Edmonton’s future-forward, cosmopolitan reputation and help transform HSBC Place—home to AIMCo’s headquarters—ESI created the city’s first digital art installation, a striking addition that redefines the building’s lobby experience.

Visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass facade, six 260-square-foot LED boxes are suspended from the ceiling, creating a digital art destination that combines hyperlocal imagery with abstract art. Scenes inspired by Edmonton, the nighttime sky and the ocean mix with live data including time of day, season and weather. The boxes are complemented by floor-to-ceiling LED columns that lead visitors to the property’s retail mall.

Creating content for 5-sided 3D forms, rather than traditional flat surfaces, posed a unique design challenge. To achieve a seamless and convincing result with a true sense of depth from every angle, ESI drew on techniques from video game design and VR to develop the display content.

Edmonton supports a vibrant downtown and our redeveloped HSBC Bank Place builds off the energy of the current rejuvenation.
